SUMMARY:OMEGA / a five-day memoir as bewilderment workshop / NEW YORK (rhinebeck)
DESCRIPTION:In The Unnamable\, Beckett offers this: “Dear incomprehension\, it’s thanks to you I’ll be myself in the end.” In our week together\, I would like to examine this idea by thinking about the concept of “bewilderment” and how it gets acted out in our writing—either through syntax\, our accessing the duende\, leaps into the unconscious\, or simply circling around what is unsaid\, unknown\, unrealized. This will be a generative workshop\, in the sense that we will look closely at work we bring in to find ways to transform it & go deeper into the shadow world—in this it is also a radical revision workshop.

SUMMARY:THE NINE DREAMS / blake & the apocalypse: an interactive performance / THE SILOS AT SAWYER YARDS / two nights: fri 14 & sat 15 april / HOUSTON (tx)
DESCRIPTION:THE NINE DREAMS / BLAKE & THE APOCALYPSE:\nA multidisciplinary performance of William Blake’s unfinished epic masterpiece Vala. \nBlake writes: \nI have planted a false oath in the earth\, it has brought forth a poison tree.\n \nBlake began Vala at the dawn of the industrial age\, when factories began billowing smoke over London—among other timely themes\, the poem prophesizes the ecological devastation that was to follow. Blake abandoned the project ten years later\, yet it remains his “most extraordinary achievement” (G.E. Bentley\, Jr.). The poem also warns against various contemporary dangers\, from chattel slavery (as practiced at the time in England)\, to unregulated capitalism\, to authoritarianism\, to anything that limits the imagination. \nNorthrup Frye writes: “There is nothing like the colossal explosion of creative power in the Ninth Night of The Four Zoas [Vala] anywhere else in English poetry.” \n

SUMMARY:KILLDEER / album release (guy barash\, kathleeen supové\, eyal maoz\, frank london\, nick flynn) / TENRI CULTURAL INSTITUTE (43a w13th st) / new focus records / NEW YORK (ny)
DESCRIPTION:A NOTE ON THE MAKING OF THE RECORDING \nLast spring\, I was offered the chance to sit with a group of insanely talented musicians and transform a handful of my poems into something else\, something new. The words came alive in ways that were unexpected\, unsettling\, moving. Some history: I’ve collaborated with Guy Barash since 2008—I call him my composer (I now encourage all my students to find their own composer). Together we have worked on half a dozen projects. We’ve worked with Kathleen Sepové on a few of these projects\, who never fails to startle me with her intensity and nuance. For this project\, I made my way to the Old Stone House in Brooklyn to perform with a group of musicians I’d rehearsed with for the first time just the day before. Guy and I had performed these poems in many venues since 2015 (Boston\, Brooklyn\, Queens Museum\, upstate New York\, Houston)\, often just the two of us\, sometimes with the band The Shaker (Simi Stone and Philip Marshall—which gave the poems a more punk/folk feel\, with Guy adding undertones of Brian Eno). For the Stone House session\, Guy assembled Sepové\, Eyal Maoz\, and Frank London. The night went well\, so we decided to meet up in a studio a few days later and attempt to recreate what had happened. For the recording\, we were each in our own room\, connected by headphones\, and listening deeply to what the others were making. This is the result of that. \n—Nick Flynn / 21 nov 2022

SUMMARY:DEPARTURES / a survey of work made in response to the pandemic by twenty-four new york artists (including three collages by NF) / 1053 GALLERY / opening sat 28 jan 4-7 / FLEISHMANNS (ny)
DESCRIPTION:1053 Gallery is pleased to present Departures\, a survey of work made in response to the pandemic by twenty-four New York artists. \n\n\n\nThe works\, most of which were created in 2020 or 2021 and have never been shown publicly\, mark a departure from previous modes of art-making as the seismic changes and uncertainty of the external world began to filter into the material\, emotional and psychic realms. From imposed constraints came new ways of expressing and creating. Some artists turned to found objects and ephemera\, becoming curious about working with new media. Many considered the stillness in intimate spaces. Some faced resurrected trauma. Others worked instinctually\, reverting back to primary tools of creation. \nOPENING reception sat 28 jan 4-7\, 1053 Gallery\, 1053 Main Street\, Fleishmanns NY
